Claiming Your Income as a Cosmetologist: Let's keep it legal.

As a Cosmetologist, it is essential to understand the importance of claiming all your income in your taxes.

While it may be tempting to underreport your earnings, it can lead to serious consequences down the line, such as being denied a loan for a mortgage or a car.

In this blog post, we will explore why it is crucial for cosmetologists to claim all of their income in their taxes.

Correctly Claiming Your Income

First and foremost, failing to claim all of your income in your taxes can result in legal consequences.

The IRS takes tax fraud extremely seriously, and intentionally underreporting your income can lead to hefty fines and even criminal charges.

As a Cosmetologist, you must report your earnings, including tips and commissions.

Not only is this practice good for your own business' reputation but good for the reputation of all beauty professionals.

If we want the public to respect us and our profession, we as a whole must leave the old, shady business practices in the past and welcome the new, clean, and clear business practices.

When you claim all your income, you build trust with financial institutions and potential business partners.

This trust is essential if you ever need to secure a loan or lease space for your business.

Lenders and landlords often rely on tax records to assess your financial stability and creditworthiness.

Having clean and accurate tax records can establish yourself as a trustworthy and reliable business owner.

Clean Records

It is vital to keep accurate records of your income to avoid legal repercussions.

Start keeping clean records of your expenses and income in a spreadsheet. Divide the expenses into categories to prepare for tax season.

Claiming all your income in your taxes is crucial for financial planning.

By accurately reporting your earnings, you can ensure that you pay the appropriate taxes and avoid any surprises come tax season.

Paying quarterly taxes is a good way to keep up with your tax payments.

Seek professional advice from your trusted CPA, who can help you with setting up your quarterly tax payments.

Additionally, correctly reporting your income can help you qualify for certain tax deductions and credits that can save you money in the long run.

Establishing Credit

Another reason why it is crucial for Cosmetologists to claim all of their income in their taxes is to establish credibility.

When you report your earnings, you demonstrate your honesty and integrity as a professional.

This can be particularly important if you are seeking a loan or applying for a mortgage.

If you have goals for buying your dream car, owning a home, or opening up your salon, then you must start showing the correct income. Otherwise, the bank will not loan you the money.

The bank wants to see your income on paper (tax returns) in order to allow you to borrow their money confidently.

By having a solid track record of accurately reporting your income, you can establish yourself as a trustworthy and reliable individual.

Accurately reporting your income can help you build a strong credit history.

Lenders and financial institutions often examine an individual's tax returns to determine their creditworthiness.

By reporting all of your income, you can demonstrate that you have a stable and consistent source of income, which can help you secure loans and credit in the future.

Avoiding IRS Issues

Accurately reporting your income can help you avoid any potential issues with the IRS.

The last thing you want is to be audited by the IRS and deal with the stress and financial burden that comes with it.

By accurately reporting your income, you can avoid any red flags that may trigger an audit, such as a large discrepancy between your reported income and your lifestyle.

An audit can be stressful and time-consuming, disrupting your business and personal life.

Cosmetologists must claim all of their income in their taxes.

Not only can failing to do so result in legal consequences, but it can also impact your financial planning, credibility, and credit history and even lead to potential issues with the IRS.

By accurately reporting your income, you can establish yourself as a trustworthy and reliable professional and ensure that you pay the appropriate taxes.

So, don't take any shortcuts when it comes to your taxes – consistently report all of your earnings and keep accurate records to avoid any potential issues down the line.

Social Security and Retirement Benefits

Reporting your full income also impacts your social security and retirement benefits eligibility.

When you retire, you may receive lower social security benefits by underreporting or not reporting your income.

This may not seem important now, but when you're ready to retire, you may not have much saved up in your Social Security fund to live on.

Accurate income reporting ensures that you receive the benefits you're entitled to, providing financial security when that sweet retirement day comes.

We want to reduce stress in our lives, not create it.

Lying or not telling the entire truth about your income will create stress.

We want to create long-term success and financial stability with our businesses.

According to Indeed.com, the average income for a Cosmetologist is $52,818.

As an industry, we are doing better but still not where we need to be.

I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that most hairstylists earn more than that.

That number is so low because of what is being reported to the IRS. Sure, some Cosmetologists may earn that much, but a lot earn 6-figures.

Plenty of them claim all their income on their taxes, while some only claim just enough.

If we want the public to respect our profession, we must start showing ourselves self-respect.
